At Howland Thursday, it was an afternoon of milestones as the PVHS Lady Howlers soccer team topped the Houlton Lady Shiretowners 5-1.
After 40 minutes it was knotted up at 1, even with PVHS holding a 10-3 shot advantage. Rylee Moulton scored the first goal of the contest for Penobscot Valley as she broke past the back line and tucked the ball in the lower right corner with 26 minutes remaining in the half. Talented Houlton sophomore Keytonya Skepple tied it 15 minutes later as she maneuvered past defenders and fired it into the left corner.
The second half belonged to Penobscot Valley, as Lauren Veino got the scoring started by kicking in a Lila Cummings corner to take the 2-1 lead. Moulton would score on a Cummings assist just four minutes later, with that one being the 100th goal of her distinguished career. Only former Howlers standout Lexi Ireland has more in the history of the program with 124. Cummings would reach a milestone herself with her next goal (on a Moulton assist), as it was her 87th of her career. This goal broke a scoring tie with Amy Hallett, moving Lila into sole possession of 3rd place on the Lady Howler list behind only Moulton and Ireland. The Cummings to Moulton connection would happen again to finish off the game, as Moulton headed in a corner kick by Cummings.
Penobscot Valley improved to 7-2 with the win, and will host Central in their homecoming game on Saturday. Brooklynn Raymond saved 7 of 10 shots for the Lady Howlers. Houlton keeper Gwen Ramsay saved 17 shots on 24 attempts for the 4-4-1 Lady Shiretowners, who will also host Central next with their game coming up on Monday.
