The University of Maine football team won their second straight league game, and moved over .500 in the Coastal Athletic Association with a 34-14 road win over Bryant University on homecoming for the Bulldogs at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears (2-4, 2-1 in the CAA) were especially dominant in the first half where they scored all their points and had a 34-0 lead at the break by putting 17 on the board in each of the first two quarters. Carter Peevy had a career day with Maine with three touchdown passes in the opening 30 minutes, two of them to transfer wide receiver Scott Woods of 66 and 14 yards respectively. Nick Laughlin (Cape Elizabeth), who hauled in an 81-yard TD reception last week in the home win over NC A&T, would also catch another from Peevy that covered 64 yards. Trevin Ewing added a 15-yard scoring run on the ground, while Samuel Tremblay hit a pair of field goals.
Peevy finished his afternoon 23-36 passing for 338 yards (a career-high for him while at UMaine) and his three touchdown throws. Sincere Baines led the backfield with 52 yards on 13 carries. Woods ended up with five receptions for 103 yards and two scores and also added a 40-yard punt return. Laughlin had five for 92 yards and a TD, while Mo Irefin also reeled in five catches for 71 yards. Maine put up 421 yards of offense with 346 of them in the first half. Graduate linebacker Christian Thomas continued his huge season and led the defense with six total tackles (three solo). Jaden Keefner rushed 12 times for 83 yards and scored both touchdowns for Bryant, who falls to 2-4 and 0-3 in the CAA. The Black Bears play a non-conference game at Merrimack College next Saturday at 1 p.m. before hitting a bye the following week.
