The University of Maine women’s soccer and field hockey teams both fell in road games on Sunday afternoon. Soccer fell at Binghamton in America East play, while field hockey was upended by Brown in non-conference action.
In the soccer game in Vestal, NY- Jahkaya Davis scored the game winning goal in the 82nd minute as Binghamton (8-1-3, 3-0-1 in America East) topped Maine 2-1. Trailing 1-0 late, the visitors tied it on a tally by Abbey Thornton (Windham High) at 80:54 assisted by Hilary Washington, before the winner by Davis just 1:30 later on a helper from Paige Luke. The Black Bears outshot the Bearcats 11-8 (8-3 on goal), and Elena Barenberg made one save in net. Maine falls to 2-5-2 and 1-1-1 in conference play. The Bears host Vermont next Sunday at noon.
In the field hockey game in Providence, Rhode Island- Zita Cohen scored on a second quarter penalty stroke as Brown (6-3) won their fifth straight with a 1-0 victory over Maine. Rozarie Mrazova made 11 saves in the cage to keep the Black Bears in it, as they were outshot 12-4. Martha Barratt had a chance in the final seconds of regulation with a shot on goal off a penalty corner to try to tie it, but Brown goalie Ellie Parker turned it away to pick up the shutout. Maine drops to 3-8 overall and will take their 0-1 America East record into a league game at UNH in Durham on Friday at 2 p.m.
