After a loss on Friday night, the Maine women’s ice hockey team got a game winning goal from Lily Fetch and some great goaltending from sophomore Kiia Lahtinen on Saturday evening to gain a non-conference split with #8 Colgate at Alfond Arena in Orono.
On Friday- Colgate scored twice over the final 2:32 of the third period to pull away for the 5-2 win.
Lulu Rucinski had a goal and an assist for Maine, while Sade Sandilands scored her first collegiate goal. Stephanie Jacob added two assists, and Gracie Hanson contributed one. Lahtinen made 35 saves.
On Saturday- Raegan Wurm had a tying unassisted goal in the second period, before Fetch had the eventual game winner 1:21 later on an assist from Isabelle Michaud in a 2-1 Maine victory.
Neither team could convert on any powerplay opportunities, as the Black Bears went 0-3 and held the Raiders to 0-5. The shots were 41-34 Colgate, and Lahtinen made 40 saves including one point blank from the low slot on Elyssa Biederman with nine seconds left in the third period. Brooke Davis made 32 saves in the loss for Colgate (3-3). Maine is now 2-5 on the season and will open up Hockey East play on the road next weekend at Providence College. The face-off times are 2 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The win for the Black Bears on Saturday was just the third victory over a top 10 team in program history, and the first since October 14, 2017 (5-2 over #10 Robert Morris University).
