The NJIT Highlanders earned their first America East win of the season on Saturday night, topping Maine 2-1 in America East women’s soccer action at Lubetkin Field in Newark, New Jersey.
NJIT (6-5-6, 1-3-3 in America East) scored less than three minutes into the match on a tally from Briana Andreoli, and then doubled their advantage when Riley Jones notched the eventual game winner in the 54th minute. Maine outshot the hosts in attempts 13-3 in the second half, and got a goal from Victoria Dungey with 15 minutes left but were unable to find the equalizer. Mojisola Ayodele made three saves in the Highlanders net in the victory. Abbey Thornton (Windham) had an assist on the Dungey goal in the loss for the Black Bears, while Elena Barenberg made two stops in goal. Maine is now 3-7-3 and 2-3-2 in the conference and will host UNH in their regular season finale in Orono on Thursday night at 6 p.m. Abby Kraemer is set to have her jersey retired in a pregame ceremony.
