Maine women’s hockey battles tough in conference series loss to Northeastern

The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team went toe to toe with #8 nationally ranked Northeastern over the weekend, but ultimately fell in both Hockey East contests at Alfond Arena in Orono as the Huskies stayed unbeaten in league play.

On Friday night- Lily Shannon and Morgan Jackson both scored in the first period, as Northeastern took the series opener 3-1. Mikayla Boarder scored for Maine, and sophomore goaltender Kiia Lahtinen made 32 saves. Ali Altiman and Paige Fong had one assist each for the Black Bears.

On Saturday evening- Maine grabbed the lead for the only time in the series on an opening goal by Isabelle Michaud in the first period, before Shannon would tally twice in the middle stanza at 11:31 and 19:43 to give Northeastern the weekend sweep in the 2-1 Huskies victory. Lily Fetch had an assist for the Black Bears, while Lahtinen made 33 stops. Maine went 0-4 on the powerplay (and 0-6 on the weekend), and now have only scored three goals with the extra man in 44 opportunities on the year (0.7%). The Huskies improve to 12-2 and 9-0 in Hockey East, while the Black Bears drop to 4-10-1 and 2-5-1 in conference action. Maine will play a non-conference road series at Harvard next Friday and Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
