At the Iona Turkey Tip-off in New York- The Black Bears women’s team rallied from 14 down in the second half to make a two point game in the fourth quarter, but the Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago ended the contest on an 8-0 run to take a 64-54 win.
Adrianna Smith and Sarah Talon both fouled out for Maine with just under three minutes left, and UIC outscored them 9-3 from that point on. Asta Blauenfeldt led the Black Bears with 14 points, while Smith finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Talon and Kaliyah Sain each had nine points, with Talon grabbing seven rebounds. Maine (1-5) will finish their competition in the tip-off when they take on St. Francis (NY) in the third place game at noon on Saturday.
At the Capital Thanksgiving Classic in Washington, DC- The hosts from American University built a 17 point first half lead, and would beat the Maine men 74-61.
The Black Bears got within 11 at the halftime break, but the Eagles opened the second half on 20-8 run to open up some breathing room at 59-36. TJ Biel led Maine with 15 points and five rebounds, Bashir N’Galang had 11 points, and Keelan Steele chipped in 10 points. The Bears (0-7) will battle Longwood University in day two of the classic on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
