Smith double double leads Maine women’s basketball over Boston University

ORONO- Adrianna Smith had a game-high 24 points and a double double on Monday night, in helping to lead Maine to their second straight win with a 54-45 victory over Boston University in a non-conference women’s basketball game played on Skip Chappelle Court at Memorial Gymnasium.

Boston University had one lead on the night at 9-8 in the first quarter, before three straight baskets from Smith (who had 11 points in the opening 10 minutes) to close the period put her team back on top for good. The Black Bears held a 24-20 advantage at the halftime break. With the Terriers down 35-28 in the third, Maine used a 9-0 run stretching into the fourth quarter to build their biggest lead of 44-28. Asta Blauenfeldt hit a three-pointer, Smith hit 2-2 from the line, Sarah Talon had a steal and layup, and Lizzy Gruber had a basket to open the final stanza during the spurt. Boston University used a run of their own of 12-2 to pull within 46-40 on two free throws from Allison Schwertner with 4:51 left to play, but a driving layup by Talon and a three-pointer by Olivia Alvarez pushed it back to 11 to help Maine put it away.

Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir led Boston University in the loss with 11 points, while Allison Schwertner added 10 points and six rebounds. Former Hampden Academy standout and Terriers junior guard Bella McLaughlin only had two shot attempts (0-2) in her homecoming, finishing with one point, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and eight turnovers in 25 minutes. BU, out of the Patriot League, falls to 3-5 on the season. Smith contributed 10 rebounds and four assists to her game-high point total. Talon also got into double figures with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Blauenfeldt chipped in eight points, four steals, and three assists. The Black Bears improve to 3-5 and will play a road game at Penn on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
