BANGOR- Saige Evans (Old Town) scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the second half on Friday night, including a layup that put her team up for good in the fourth quarter as Husson topped Thomas College 69-57 in North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Newman Gymnasium.
Both teams held a lead in the first half, with the Terriers taking the biggest of those on a Kaya Loring (PVHS) layup in the second quarter for a 24-15 advantage. The Eagles rallied to tie it (29-29) with a 14-5 run that was capped off by a Laney Farrar (Gray-New Gloucester) jumper, before Thomas regained the lead by a slim three point margin at the break. After Husson jumped back on top early in the third, Thomas took their last lead of the night on a three-pointer by Kay McLellan at 43-42. The hosts answered just 20 seconds later when Sophia Carnes also hit one from long distance, and her team wouldn’t trail again. With the score knotted at 53-53 with 5:19 left to play in the fourth quarter, Evans in the paint got a layup to go and the Eagles would end the contest on a 16-4 run to sew up their eighth conference victory.
Pryelle Kesse-Beda had a game-high 19 points and also grabbed six rebounds in the loss for Thomas College. McLellan added 10 points (3-4 three-pointers), Roxy Dagostino put in eight points, and Holly Loring (PVHS) chipped in six points and five rebounds. The Terriers win streak is snapped at four games, falling to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the North Atlantic Conference. Evans had another double double for Husson, as she hauled in 13 rebounds, blocked two shots, and had two steals. That is the fifth straight game with a double double for the sophomore. Lilly Roy (Wisdom) had 15 points (3-5 three-pointers), Danielle Dow (MCI) recorded nine points and 10 rebounds, Laela Martinez had eight points, while Abby Radel (Ellsworth) and Aubrey Kachnovich both put in six points. Kachnovich also had seven rebounds. The Eagles are now 9-6 and 8-2 in league play and will host Lesley University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
