Husson men’s basketball earns weekend conference split

The Husson University men’s basketball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference games on Friday and Saturday at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor against UMaine-Farmington and Maine Maritime Academy.

On Friday vs UMF- The Eagles had a five point lead with 1:21 left to play, but the Beavers scored the final five to pull out an 81-80 victory. Zach McLaughlin (Hampden Academy) nailed a big three-pointer, and then Kory Donlin (Medomak) got the game winning tip-in of a McLaughlin miss with 11 seconds remaining. McLaughlin led UMF with 27 points, while Jason Reynolds (Winslow) also had a big game especially on the glass putting in 18 points and hauling down 21 rebounds. The Beavers are now 15-5 and 12-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. Eric Ahlers had a big start to his weekend by registering 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the Husson loss.

On Saturday vs Maine Maritime- Ahlers led things again with 35 points and 14 rebounds (6-10 three-pointers), as the Eagles picked up the weekend split by sinking the Mariners 92-85. Drew Hamilton and Marcus Schade both hit 5-10 three-pointers and had 25 and 24 points respectively in the loss for Maine Maritime Academy who dropped to 7-13 and 7-6 in the NAC. Gil Matondo added 16 points and six rebounds, and Andre McCauley had 14 points for Husson who sees their record go to 12-7 and 11-2 in league play. The Eagles will play a non-conference game at Bowdoin College on Tuesday night.
