In a USCAA and Yankee Small College Conference women’s basketball showdown at Kirk Hall in Auburn on Wednesday night, #4 nationally ranked University of Maine-Augusta knocked off previously unbeaten and #1 in the country Central Maine Community College 75-73.
With the Mustangs building a couple of six point leads in the opening two quarters, the Moose battled back in what was a closely contested game all night to take a 38-37 edge at halftime. A three-pointer from Hunter Hartsgrove (Katahdin) and a layup from Ava Smith (Lake Region) put CMCC back in front 42-38 early in the third. But UMA answered, as Bella Petrocci nailed a three-pointer of her own with 1:05 left in that third period to give the guests the lead back for good (55-52). With the contest still in the balance, two free throws from Sage Fortin (Cony) with 13 seconds remaining to play iced the victory for the Moose.
Breanna Dwyer led Central Maine in the loss with 19 points. Smith recorded a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Mustangs are now 19-1 and 10-1 in the YSCC. Petrocci had a team-high 17 points (three 3-pointers) for UMaine-Augusta. Fortin finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Yvonne Roberge added 14 points and seven assists. Also in double figures off the bench was Emilee Brown (Gardiner) with 12 points (three 3-pointers). The Moose improve to 15-4 and 10-2 in conference play.
