Maine women’s hockey scores big road win at Boston College

Stephanie Jacob scored two goals, and Mackenzie Podewell would notch the eventual game winner on Friday night as Maine topped Boston College 4-3 in women’s Hockey East action at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

The Black Bears dominated the first period outshooting the Eagles 30-7 (17-5 on net), but BC senior netminder Grace Campbell stopped them all to keep it scoreless. The hosts would break the deadlock for their only lead of the night when Olivia Maffeo scored on the powerplay at 3:33 of the second. That lead didn’t last long, as Maine on a 2 on 1 breakout would tie it up just 1:37 later. Mikayla Boarder took the original shot that was stopped by Campbell, but Jacob was there to bury the rebound at 5:10.

Maine jumped on top for good on the second of the game by Jacob at 2:42 of the third period. Ava Stevenson extended it to 3-1 at 6:05, before Boston College sliced it back to a one goal deficit on a marker from Ava Thomas at 13:29. The game winner by Podewell came at 18:49, when she threw one out in front of the net from the boards that was deflected off the stick of an Eagles defenseman and into the net. Lauren Glaser kept the hopes alive for BC with a tally at 19:03, but they were unable to find the equalizer as the Black Bears hung on for the road victory.

Thomas had a goal and an assist for Boston College, while Emma Conner had two assists. Campbell made 35 saves, and the Eagles went 1-1 on the powerplay as they fall to 11-15-1 and 9-7-1 in Hockey East. Along with the two goals from Jacob, Podewell had a goal and an assist for Maine. Boarder, Lulu Rucinski, Lily Fetch, and Isabelle Michaud added one assist each. Kiia Lahtinen made 32 stops in net. The Black Bears did not have a powerplay opportunity as they improve to 10-15-3 and 6-9-3 in conference play and move into a fifth place tie in the league standings with Boston University and Vermont. It is the first win for Maine over Boston College since November 3, 2023 (0-6 previously including playoffs). The teams will take a day off before finishing off their two game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
