UMass-Lowell dominated big on the glass on Saturday afternoon, and would pull away from Maine 91-77 in America East men’s basketball action at Kennedy Family Athletic Complex in Lowell, Massachusetts.
The Black Bears got off a solid start and had an 11-6 lead on a Logan Carey layup just over 3:30 into the first half. The Riverhawks would respond with a 12-0 run to take the advantage for good capped off by a pair of free throws from Darrel Yepdo. Maine would chip away early in the second half, slicing a 14 point deficit to seven (49-42) on a dunk from Mekhi Gray with 16:56 left. Lowell would put it away with another spurt of their own of 16-3 over the next 3:10 to push their lead out to 20 (65-45). Angel Montas Jr. who had a big game for the hosts nailed a pair of three-pointers during the run. The glass was the story of the day, as UML outrebounded Maine 46-11 (17-1 on offensive glass).
Months Jr. was 12-19 from the floor (2-5 three-pointers, 4-4 free throw line) in scoring a game-high 30 points for UMass-Lowell. He also added eight rebounds. Yepdo finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Xavier Spencer contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists as the Riverhawks improved to 9-14 and 4-4 in America East. Carey had a career-high 28 points and four steals in the Maine loss. Gray and TJ Biel each chipped in 17 points each. Gray had five assists, while Biel scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. The Black Bears had their two game win streak snapped in falling to 5-18 and 3-5 in conference play. Maine will host Vermont on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
