UNH spoils Senior Day for Maine women’s hockey

ORONO- Callista Printz scored her firsgoal of the season 4:32 into the third period that ended up being the game winner on Saturday afternoon, as UNH spoiled Senior Day for Maine with a 3-0 Hockey East women’s victory at Alfond Arena before a program record crowd of 1,730.

Both goalies, Kiia Lahtinen and Noemi Martinez, were very good in net as both had several Grade A saves in the opening two periods to keep the game scoreless. The winner by Printz in the third came off a wristshot from just inside the right point that beat Lahtinen inside the far post through traffic. UNH added a shorthanded goal Nina Rossi at 12:30 and an empty netter by Addison Spitz at 17:08, as Martinez earned her secong shutout of the season.

Alex Therrien and Josie Linn added an assist each for UNH. Martinez ended up with 31 saves. The Wildcats went 0-3 on the powerplay and improved to 16-13-3 and 10-10-2 in Hockey East. Stephanie Jacob and Kendall Sundby each had four shots on net in the Maine loss, as the Black Bears also went 0-3 on the powerplay. Lahtinen had 35 saves, as the team falls to 11-18-4 and 7-12-4 in conference play. After the game they would honor senior players in goaltender Julia Bachetti, forward Danielle Brunette, and forward Ava Stevenson. Maine can finish as high as sixth place in the league standings with some help as they finish their regular season next Thursday afternoon at 3:30 on the road vs Merrimack.
