The 20th ranked University of Maine men’s ice hockey team, coming off a big sweep on Senior Weekend over Merrimack this past Friday and Saturday, could put themselves in better playoff position with a successful final three games of the regular season.
The Black Bears (16-12-3, 10-10-1 in Hockey East, 30 points) are currently only two points out of fourth place in the league behind UMass and Northeastern (32 points). They get a chance at those Huskies this weekend for two games in Portland (Friday) and in Lowell, Massachusetts (Saturday). Maine is trying to avoid an opening round playoff contest, as an opening round game would mean they would have to win twice to make the semifinals in Boston in trying to defend their conference title. A top four secures a home quarterfinal and only one victory to advance. UMass has one game in hand over the Black Bears.
