Owen Fowler scored two goals, including a first period game winner on Friday night as #20 Maine shutout Northeastern 4-0 in men’s Hockey East action at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The Black Bears continue to climb and have now moved into sole possession of fifth place in the conference with their third straight victory.
Fowler scored at 11:16 of the first, collecting a puck behind the Northeastern net and walking to the front before burying a backhander into the back of the cage. Josh Nadeau and Sully Scholle assisted on the goal. It was the 100th career point for Nadeau. Fowler doubled the lead on a breakaway shorthanded at 6:56 of the second, before powerplay goals by Brandon Holt (11:18) and Nadeau (12:38) 1:20 apart in that middle stanza would finish the scoring on the night.
Lawton Zacher made 42 saves in net in the loss for Northeastern, as they were outshot 46-25. The Huskies went 0-4 on the powerplay in falling to 15-16-1 and 10-12-0 in Hockey East. Along with the two goal night for Fowler, Nadeau continued his hot play with one goal and two assists. He now has amassed 11 points during the three game win streak for Maine. Miguel Marques had two assists, while Scholle and freshman goaltender Mathis Rousseau had one assist each. Rousseau recorded his second shutout of the season in net. The Black Bears went 2-5 on their powerplay opportunities as their record now moves to 17-12-3 and 11-10-1 in league play. The teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. Maine will enter Saturday two points behind UMass for fourth place, and only four back of UConn for third with two games remaining in the regular season.
