PVHS girls win second straight state title

Penobscot Valley High School made it back to back girls basketball state championships on Saturday afternoon, hanging on to defeat Mt. Abram 42-35 in the Class D final at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Howlers, after trailing by one at halftime, opened up a three point lead by going on a 9-2 run to end the third quarter to extend their advantage to 38-28. The Roadrunners scored the first seven points of the final eight minutes to slice it to 38-35, but some key plays down the stretch including a blocked three-point attempt by Lila Cummings and two free throws by Rylee Moulton allowed PVHS to hold on. Cummings, playing in her 20th championship game in her career among all sports, would lead the way with 15 points, 16 rebounds, four steals, and three blocked shots. Brooklyn Raymond added 13 points and five rebounds. PVHS, who won the Class C state title last season, finishes with a record of 17-5. Jenna Osgood had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Mt. Abram, while Abby McCarty put in 11 points. The Roadrunners, who were seeking their third state crown and first since 2007, finish as runner-up with a record of 18-4.
