Unfortunate news out of the University of Maine Thursday afternoon. In a press release, Maine announced that five players have asked for and been granted a release from the womens basketball team after the spring semester.
Laia Sole, Anita Kelava, Naira Caceres, Tihanna Stojsavljevic, and Isabel Hernandez Pepe all will be leaving the program.
“We would like to thank all five student-athletes for their contributions to our program over their time at the University of Maine, and wish them well in their future endeavors”, commented interim head coach Amy Vachon in the written release.
Maine finished 18-16 in the regular season in 2016-17, eventually falling in the America East championship game 66-50 to Albany back on March 10th.
The five players contributed to 31 percent of the scoring for Maine this past season. No word on where the five would be going to play after their release from the Maine program Thursday.
