Donato to be named Orono girls basketball coach

May 6, 2017

Just over a month after coach Nick Winchester left the Orono girls basketball varsity program to coach at Hampden Academy, it appears a familiar name to all high school basketball fans will become the next Red Riots coach.

According to multiple reports, and first reported by Fox 22 reporter Jon Alba, former Lawrence girls coach Jon Donato is due to take the job pending board approval, which was expected to be approved.

Donato, takes over an Orono squad that finished 5-13 a year ago, finishing 14th in Class B North and missing the playoffs.

Donato spent seven years at Lawrence and won a state championship in 2015. He also won four state titles in his time coaching at Houlton. Donato has won 11 regional titles, with most recent coming in 2016 with Lawrence.

Donato also coached at Hall Dale and Mount View and has an overall coaching record of 547-219, a 71% winning percentage.
