2017 UMaine Football looks to continue success, while 17-18 hockey team faces tough schedule

The University of Maine Football team comes into the 2017 campaign looking to build off a winning season in 2016 where they finished 6-5, and was one win short of making the NCAA Division 1AA playoffs. The Bears are led by second year Head Coach Joe Harasymiak.

The Bears begin the new season on Thursday, August 31st when they travel to Durham to face the rival UNH Wildcats. Maine then will open up the home schedule the following Saturday, September 9th when they welcome Bryant to Alfond Stadium.

After a week off Maine then faces a tough three game road stretch with games at defending national champion James Madison, Division 1 opponent Central Florida, and Villanova. Maine returns home for homecoming against Rhode Island on October 14th. The schedule also consists of a home game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland against Deleware on November 4th, and a game at Fenway Park the following week against UMass.

 

The Maine Mens Ice Hockey team comes off an 11-21-4 mark in 2016-17. The Bears open up the regular season by hosting three straight series at the Alfond Arena.

After an exhibition matchup with Acadia on Sunday, October 4th, Maine welcomes in UConn for a Hockey East showdown to begin the regular season on Oct 7-8.

Maine then hosts Miami of Ohio and perennial national power and national runnersup Minnesota-Duluth for two game sets the following weekends. The Black Bears will try to build on their home success from last season where they went 9-6-0 at the Alfond.

Maine will head overseas to compete in the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Ireland on November 24th and 25th. Maine will face Hockey East rival Providence on Friday, with the winner to advance to the title game against either RPI or Clarkson on Saturday. The two losing teams play in a consolation contest Saturday afternoon.

The Bears will play a 21 game Hockey East schedule. The home league schedule is highlighted with a two game series against Boston University November November 17th and 18th, and the UNH Wildcats January 19th and 20th. Maine also faces Boston College at home on February 17th for a single game. The home series with BU will be an Orono/Portland series, with Fridays game at the Alfond and Saturdays game at the Cross Insurance Arena.
