Abby Kelly scored a game high 23 points off the bench Friday night to lead the Bowdoin Lady Polar Bears to a convincing 90-62 win over Wartburg College out of Iowa in a Division III women’s national semifinal basketball game at Civic Center Arena in Rochester, Minnesota.
Bowdoin jumped out to a 28-12 lead after one quarter of play and never let the Knights of Wartburg back into the game, leading by as many as 31.
Lauren Petit added 16 points, Taylor Choate had 12 points, and Kate Kerrigan had 11 points and 12 rebounds to help lead Bowdoin (29-2) to a spot in the national title game. Former Bangor High standout Cordelia Stewart added nine points in 18 minutes of action. Wartburg ends their season at 31-1. The Knights were led by Katie Summer who had 16 points, and Miranda Murphy added 12.
Bowdoin faces a familiar opponent in Saturday’s national title game in NESCAC rival Amherst, who is 32-0. The two teams met in a conference game back on January 27th, with the Mammoths of Amherst scoring the 49-45 win. Tipoff for the championship game is slated for 8:30 p.m.
