The Tampa Bay Rays scored six runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-4 on opening day Thursday afternoon at Tropicana Field.
Denard Span ripped a three run triple off Carson Smith (0-1) to cap the Rays rally. Joe Kelly and Smith issued four walks during the inning with all scoring.
Chris Sale pitched six shutout innings for the Red Sox. He allowed one hit and three walks, while striking out nine.
Xander Bogaerts sparked the offense with three hits, including two doubles and two runs scored. Eduardo Nunez hit a two run inside the park homer in the third inning. Rafael Devers had two RBI.
