PORTLAND, Maine- Mike Shawaryn pitched six inning of scoreless three hit baseball Saturday afternoon, to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 3-0 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NY Mets) in a Double A baseball game before 7,368 fans on a cold gray day at Hadlock Field.
Portland went up 1-0 in the first on two out hits by Esteban Quiroz and Jordan Betts, then an RBI single by Tate Matheny, scoring Quiroz. That is all Shawaryn (1-1) would need, as he struck out five, only walked one, and threw 56 strikes on 88 pitches. Quiroz drove in another run with a bases loaded walk in the fifth, and Jeremy Rivera had an RBI single in the eighth to finish the scoring. Adam Lau pitched the ninth to pick up his first save. The Sea Dogs are now 3-5 on the season. The game was the first day game for the home portion of the 2018 schedule.
For Binghamton, Nabil Crismatt (1-1) took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs, nine hits, with two walks, and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. All the attention on the day seemed to be focused on former Heisman Trohpy winner and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who batted eighth as the designated hitter. Tebow doubled down the right field line for his only hit in three at bats. The Rumble Ponies drop to 3-5, as the Sea Dogs have taken the first two games of the series.
Portland and Binghamton close out a three game series at 1 pm Sunday at Hadlock Field.
