Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 253 past athlete of the week winners.
This week, we had six Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine Mckechnie Only four hits in 15 innings to help the Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers stay undefeated on the season. McKechnie edged out Breanne Oakes of Hermon to earn her sixth athlete of the week honor. McKechnie who is only a sophomore joins Kolleen Bouchard (19) from Houlton, Justin Thompson (9) from Schenck, Bryce Gilbert (9) from PCHS, Taylor Schildroth (9) from George Stevens, Karli Theberge (7) from Hermon, Gage Feeney (7) from Washington Academy, and Parise Rossignol (6) from Van Buren as student/athletes she that have earned at least six athlete of the week honors.
The Charles Inn female athlete of the week
Leine Mckechnie- PVHS- softball- pitched a perfect three innings with seven strikeouts in 13-1 win over Lee. Pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and had a two run homer and five RBI in 13-1 win over Searsport. Pitched a four hitter with nine strikeouts and hit a homer with three runs scored in 13-3 win over Stearns.
Runner up
Breanne Oakes- Hermon- softball- pitched a one hitter with 11 strikeouts, also had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored a run in 4-0 win over MDI. Struck out eight in three innings and had two hits, three RBI, and scored one run in 14-2 win over John Bapst.
Other nominations
Mikayla Tripp-Bucksport- softball- pitched a no-hitter with one walk in 15-0 win over George Stevens.
Kylie Vining- Southern Aroostook- softball- hit two homers in 15-8 win over Ashland. Had five hits in 12-8 win over Hodgdon.
Paige Trask- Winslow- softball- had four hits, including a triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and allowed only two earned runs in 8-3 win over Erskine. Had two singles and two runs scored in 12-5 win over Mt. View.
Caitlyn Hardy- Dexter- softball- had four hits and three RBI in 14-0 win over George Stevens.
