Leine McKechnie captures third straight Charles Inn female athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 254 past athlete of the week winners.

This week, we had seven Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie allowed only one hit and struck out 32 in 15 innings this week. It is the eighth student/athlete honor for McKechnie, including her third in a row. McKechnie who is only a sophomore joins Kolleen Bouchard (19) from Houlton, Justin Thompson (9) from Schenck, Bryce Gilbert (9) from PCHS, Taylor Schildroth (9) from George Stevens as the only student/athletes with at least eight athlete of the week honors.

The Charles Inn female athlete of the week

Leine Mckechnie- PVHS- softball- pitched a no-hitter with one walk and 10 strikeouts in 12-0 win over Deer Isle-Stonington. Fired a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and also had three hits in 12-0 win over Schenck. Pitched a perfect game with nine strikeouts and also hit two doubles in 14-0 win over Penquis.

Runner up

Mikayla Tripp- Bucksport- softball- went 2-2 including a double, walk, and run scored in 2-0 win over #3 Mattanawcook. Went 3-3, including a triple, walk, three runs scored, and three RBI in 17-3 win over #4 Orono. Went 3-4 and also walked, scored five runs, and had two RBI in 20-3 win over Searsport. Overall Tripp hit .916 in three games this week.

Other nominations

Avery Herrick- Dexter – softball- struck out eight and had two hits, including a triple in 19-3 win over Penquis. Had 12 strikeouts along with two hits and two RBI in 8-6 win over PCHS. Reached base all four times and had seven strikeouts in six innings in 13-1 win over George Stevens.

Katelin Saunders- Bucksport- softball- pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts in 2-0 win over Mattanawcook.

Faith Fugel- Central- softball- reached base five times, including four hits in 15-9 win over Penquis.

Kourtney Thurlow- Mattanawcook- softball- had three hits and seven RBI in 21-0 win over Lee.

Jenna Keach- Searsport- softball- went 4-4, including a walk off home run and was the winning pitcher allowing five hits and four runs, while striking out nine in 6-4 win over Stearns.
