Former Black Bear Snow relieved of duties with Islanders

After 12 years as General Manager of the New York Islanders, former Maine Black Bear goalie Garth Snow was fired on Tuesday along with head coach Doug Weight.

Snow had also been the President of Hockey Operations and the Alternate Governor of the Islanders since July 2006. Snow only helped the Islanders to one playoff series in the 12 years in his position.

The announcement came from the new President of Hockey Operations Lou Lamoriello who was hired on May 22. Weight, also a former NHL player, took over for another former Maine alum Jack Capuano on an interim basis when Capuano was fired on January 17, 2017. Weight will stay on with the team in a to be determined advisory role.

Snow played four years at Maine, leading the NCAA in wins for three straight seasons and helping the Black Bears win the 1993 National Title. Garth would go on to play 12 years in the NHL with the Nordiques, Flyers, Canucks, Penguins, and Islanders. Snow owns a career record of 135-147-1, with a 2.80 goals against average, and a .901 save percentage.
