Dexter offense explodes as Herrick pitches gem in prelim win over Sumner: Audio replay included

DEXTER — the Dexter Tigers softball team scored early and often on Wednesday afternoon. Avery Herrick took care of the rest as she fired a one hitter in a 16-0 win over Sumner in a class C prelim game.

Dexter scored two in the first inning and five more in the second. Peyton Grant scored four runs, including two in the first two innings. Kaitlyn Webber had three hits, three runs scored, and four RBI. Tory Asbury had three hits and three RBI. Caitlin Hardy scored three runs and had two RBI. Close Mountain had two hits and three runs scored. Cheyenne Beem reached base twice and scored two runs. Regan McNally had a triple and RBI.

The top four in the Dexter batting order went 9-13, reaching base 14 times with 11 RBI. Herrick faced the minimum 15 hitters through five innings. She didn’t issue a walk and struck out four. Both runners that reached base for Sumner got thrown out by Dexter catcher Asbury. Dexter will play at top seed Bucksport in a quarterfinal game on Thursday afternoon.
