Kelly struggles as Sox fall to Astros in series opener

Joe Kelly gave up three runs on four hits in the eighth inning as the Boston Red Sox wasted an outstanding performance from David Price in a 6-3 loss to the Houston Astros at Fenway Park on Friday night.

Price left the game with a 2-0 lead and two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Brasier struggled, allowing the two inherited runners to score plus one of his own as the Astros took a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox evened up the score when JD Martinez singled home Jackie Bradley JR in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kelly (4-2) struggled in the top of the eighth inning. The Red Sox got the tying run up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, but Hector Rondon retired Rafael Devers and Bradley JR to get out of the jam.

Price allowed only two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out 10 in 6.1 innings. Xander Bogaerts hit homer #20 in the fourth inning. Mookie Betts had three hits, while Martinez had two RBI. Eduardo Rodriguez will face Charlie Morton in game two of the three game series on Saturday afternoon at 4:05.
