Sale is sharp as Red Sox defeat Mets to inch closer to division title

September 16, 2018

Chris Sale pitched three shutout innings and the Boston Red Sox got a two run homer from Brock Holt in a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Sale allowed one hit on his 42 pitches (27 strikes). Sale didn’t issue a walk and struck out two. Sale will next start on Friday night at Cleveland and is expected to be extended a bit more.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the third inning highlighted by Holt’s homer. Mookie Betts also hit a sacrifice fly during the inning. Later in the game, Betts left the game with an injury but Alex Cora said he expects Betts to be in the lineup on Tuesday when the Red Sox start a three game series at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox have a magic number of two to win the American League East. If they win one game at New York they will clinch there.

The Mets evened the score when Drew Pomeranz and Joe Kelly struggled out of the Red Sox bullpen. Brandon Workman (6-0) settled things down with a scoreless eighth inning. Steven Wright pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first career save.

Tzu-Wei Lin ripped a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was moved to third base on a Holt fly ball and scored on an Andrew Benintendi sacrifice fly.

The Red Sox now have a record of 103-47 with 12 games remaining in the regular season.
