The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team, who spent time in the national rankings last season, opened up their regular season Friday and Saturday with a two game series in Emden, Connecticut with the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
Friday night, Tereza Vanisova had the tying goal in the second period and then the game winner at 3:26 of overtime to help Maine open the weekend with a 2-1 win.
Ali Beltz, Alyson Matteau, Celine Tedenby, and Ida Press all recorded assists for the Bears. Carly Jackson made 9 saves on 10 shots in net. Lexie Adzija had the goal for the Bobcats.
Saturday afternoon Maine went to 2-0 by cruising to a 3-0 win.
Liga Miljone, Vanisova, and Taylor Leech had the Black Bear goals. Vanisova, Daria Tereshkina, Milijone, and Michelle Weiss all recorded assists. Sophomore Loryn Porter made 14 saves for the shutout in her first career Black Bear start. Quinnipiac drops to 0-4 in the loss.
Maine will continue non-conference action when they host Sacred Heart in the home openers next Friday and Saturday at Alfond Arena. Game time is 2 pm both days.
