Class D boys quarterfinal- 10/23/18- PVHS 4 Schenck 0
The quarter-finals got under way at Dave Lovett Field in Howland Tuesday, as Schenck visited Penobscot Valley in a #2 vs #7 matchup. The two teams had split on the regular season, with the Wolverines winning the first game in early September, 2-1, while the Howlers won the second one a month later, 2-0.
PVHS struck early and often in this one, as the earlier snow squalls made the field extremely slippery. Within the first two minutes, Brad McKechnie’s cross attempt was deflected off Schenck’s Austin Deroos’ leg, resulting in a corner kick. Zach Doore put a perfectly placed corner toward the back post of the goal, as Junior Reece Carter jumped and headed into the net at the 38:02 mark. 2 minutes and 15 seconds later, the Howlers struck again. Grant Kidon got a pass behind the Wolverine line where McKechnie gathered it and put it past keeper Tyrone Davis for a 2-0 lead. This goal put McKechnie in sole possession of 2nd place on PVHS’ all time scoring list.
McKechnie would strike again less than 3 1/2 minutes later. A Schenck defender cleared the ball to Kidon, who headed the ball to Doore by the edge of the six yard line. Doore put a beautiful pass out in front of the net, where Brad put it in. The game would remain 3-0 for the remainder of the half.
In the second half, both teams had some close opportunities, but neither capitalized until under 14 minutes left in the game. Kidon secured the ball near midfield, as he saw Alex Tash up near the 18 yard line. Tash trapped the ball, made a quick move past the defender, and put the ball into the right hand corner for the final goal of the game.
Elijah Wood saved 9 of 13 shots for Penobscot Valley, who improve to 14-1 and advance to the Semi Finals for the second straight year. Schenck’s Tyrone Davis stopped 6 of 25 shots, who finish their season at 9-7.
