UMaine hockey: Men’s, women’s teams swept

Both University of Maine hockey teams were in action on Friday night, as the men were on the road at Boston University and the women hosted the #5 team in the country Northeastern in Hockey East matchups.

 

At Agannis Arena in Boston, the Maine Black Bears allowed the Boston University Terriers six powerplays, and BU converted on three of those including the last one coming with just 1:11 to go in the game to lead the Terriers to a 3-2 win.

Eduards Tralmaks had given Maine a 1-0 lead in the first on a beautiful wristshot from just above the faceoff circles. The Bears became undisciplined late in the second period. Bobo Carpenter tied it for BU at 17:17 on the powerplay, and just 33 seconds late Maine took another penalty. Joel Farabee gave the Terriers their first lead of the night at 2-1 at 18:58 on their second powerplay goal in 1:41. Tim Doherty tied it though for the Black Bears at 14:09 of the third on the powerplay to make it 2-2. The last penalty of the night on Maine was the most costly, as Sam Becker was called for tripping with 1:48 left. David Farrance cashed in with a slapshot from the point 37 seconds into the powerplay for the game winner.

Jeremy Swayman made 39 saves in the loss in the Maine net, as the Bears drop to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in Hockey East. Jake Oettinger made 36 saves in the win, as BU improved to 3-4-1, 3-2-1. BU was 3-6 on the powerplay, while Maine was 1-5. The two teams will finish their two game series Saturday night at 7 pm.

 

At Alfond Arena in Orono, the red hot #5 Northeastern Huskies got a pair of goals from Alina Mueller to win their 10th straight game with a 3-1 win over the Maine Black Bears.

Chloe Aurard scored in the first for the Huskies, before Mueller gave the visitors some breathing room with an even strength goal unassisted at 5:56, and a powerplay marker at 19:19 of the second to make it 3-0. Celine Tedenby had the lone Bears goal at 11:12 of the third period as Maine lost their third straight game (7-6-0, 3-6-0 in Hockey East).

Carly Jackson made 26 saves in the Maine net in the loss, while Aerin Frankel made 23 in the Huskies win. Maine was 0-8 on the powerplay, while Northeastern was 1-4. The Huskies improve to 11-1-1, 10-0-1 in Hockey East. The two game series and season series between the two teams will conclude Saturday at 2 pm.
