Kenyon Drake scored on a 69 yard touchdown on a series of hooks and laterals as time expired Sunday afternoon, giving the Miami Dolphins a shocking 34-33 win over the New England Patriots at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
The game featured a total of 10 lead changes. The Patriots also had a missed extra point and missed field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, and some poor clock management late in the second quarter when New England was trying to extend a 27-21 lead deep in Miami territory. But Tom Brady got sacked on a second down play and the clock ran out. Gostkowski had extended the final lead to 33-28 with just 16 seconds left in the game, before Ryan Tannehill completed a pass downfield from his own 31 with seven seconds remaining. Two hook and laterals ended up getting the ball in Drakes hands, who avoided and outraced Patriot defenders up the right sideline and into the endzone to end the game as time expired, dropping the Pats to 9-4 and avoiding what would of been a celebration of a 10th straight AFC East title for the guests.
Brady had a great day passing, finishing 27-43, 359 yards, and three touchdowns. James Develin, Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and Cordarrelle Patterson had the New England touchdowns. Gronkowski caught eight passes for 107 yards, Josh Gordon had five for 96, and Edelman had nine for 87 yards. The Pats only managed 76 total yards rushing led by Sony Michel with 56 on 20 carries. Kyle Van Noy and Devin Mccourty each had seven tackles to lead the defense, with Van Noy also recording 1.5 sacks. Tannehill was sacked a total of five times on the afternoon.
Tannehill was 14-19, 265 yards, and three touchdowns for 7-6 Miami. Frank Gore led the rushing attack with 12 attempts for 92 yards. Former Patriot Branden Bolden scored two rushing touchdowns for the Dolphins totaling 60 yards on two carries. Kenny Stills had eight catches for 135 yards and a touchdown, while Drake had 79 total yards with 55 coming on the last second lateral catch and 24 on the ground. Kiki Alonso had nine total tackles to lead the defense.
With a first half touchdown pass, Brady also became the all time leader in touchdown passes with 580 that includes regular and postseason, passing Peyton Manning who had 579. Brady also moved into third by himself in regular season touchdown passes, overtaking Brett Favre with 509 as Favre had 508. New England heads to Pittsburgh for another big AFC showdown next Sunday to battle the Steelers at 4:25 pm.
