DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Foxcroft Ponies started quick and held on for a 52-42 win over Washington Academy in a class B boys basketball game played on Saturday afternoon.
Things didn’t start well as Ponies sophomore starter Logan Martin was injured 19 seconds into the contest. It appeared to be an ankle injury for Martin.
Foxcroft scored the first eight points of the game and held a 14-4 lead after the first quarter behind nine points from Hyatt Smith. The teams played an even second quarter as the Ponies held a 25-15 halftime lead.
The Raiders got the deficit as close as six points in the second half. Smith and Jeremy Richard combined for 14 third quarter points as the Ponies built the lead back up to 11 (40-29) at the end of the third quarter.
Richard had 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter. Smith scored a game high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Ponies. Lucas Ames added eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. Jair Garcia came off the bench and made two 3 pointers, he also pulled down four rebounds, and played solid defense. Foxcroft (5-4) will travel to Orono on Tuesday.
Foxcroft shot 7-21 from the free throw line, while Washington Academy shot 3-7. The Raiders out rebounded Foxcroft 41-24.
Cecil Gray powered the Raiders attack with 14 points, 20 rebounds, and three blocks. Jose Blanco recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jamie Ortega added 11 points and eight rebounds. Washington Academy (4-5) will host Ellsworth on Monday.
