Central starts quick and holds off Mattanawcook for big class C girls victory

EAST CORINTH– The Central Red Devils started the game on a 11-0 run and held on for a 42-35 win over Mattanawcook in a class C girls basketball game played Thursday night.

After the Red Devils run to start things, Mattanawcook scored the next five points. The Lynx cut the deficit to 15-11 going into the second quarter. Central started the second quarter on another run, this time 6-0. Katelyn Tolman made a three pointer for the Lynx to make it 21-14 going into halftime.

Central outscored the Lynx 9-8 in the third quarter. Mattanawcook cut the deficit to 34-30 in the fourth quarter. Madi Speed (6) and Rachel Smith (4) combined for 10 fourth quarter points to help the Red Devils secure the victory.

Central out rebounded Mattanawcook 25-23. The Red Devils shot 12-25 from the free throw line, while the Lynx shot 6-12. Mattanawcook (6-9) and Central (11-4) will play a rare back to back when they face each other again in Lincoln on Friday night.

Emily Tolman put in 11 points to lead the way for the Lynx. Katelyn Tolman added nine points and seven rebounds. Lexi Thompson scored six points on two 3 pointers.

Alyse Campbell led the Red Devils with 11 points (nine in the first half), seven rebounds, and five steals. Speed added nine points and three steals, Smith filled up the stat sheet with eight points, 10 steals, seven rebounds, and two assists. Emilee Cohen scored seven points, while Alison Shaw chipped in with six points.
