Jeremy Pena, Tyler Schwanz, and Kevin Sypulkowski had three hits each to lead the University of Maine Black Bears baseball team to a 13-3 victory over New Mexico State at Las Cruces, New Mexico on Sunday afternoon.
The win capped an impressive series and start to the season for the Black Bears. The series started with Justin Courtney turning in his second strong outing on the mound this series. Courtney allowed one run on seven hits in pitching Maine to a 3-1 victory over New Mexico State. He struck out two, and did not issue a walk. The Black Bears fell in the two games on Saturday at New Mexico State by scores of 7-3 and 3-2.
Courtney was also part of the season opening 4-3 win over Clemson on February 19th. Courtney allowed zero earned runs in a no decision. He allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out eight. Maine fell 9-4 and 19-2 in the other two games of the Clemson series.
Maine (3-4) will start a 13 games in 16 day stretch in Florida, when they play St. Bonaventure and North Dakota State at Port Charlotte.
