Bruins slip past Flames on Bergeron goal

BOSTON, MASS- The Boston Bruins welcomed defenseman Dougie Hamilton back to the TD Garden Tuesday night for the first time since he got traded to Calgary last June. The Bruins then sent him packing again, this time with a loss, as Captain Patrice Bergeron scored a late third period powerplay goal to lead the Bruins over the Flames 2-1.

The Bruins, playing their first game with newly acquired Lee Stempniak and John Michael-Lilles, got a first period goal from Landon Ferraro for a 1-0 advantage even though they were outshot in the period 8-5 by the visitors from Calgary.

Tuuka Rask, who made 24 saves to earn the win, made several key stops from point blank range late in the first period as well as in the second with the Flames on the powerplay.

Calgary (26-33-4), finally broke through at 5:35 of the final period as rookie defenseman Jakub Nakladal scored his first career goal to knot the game at 1-1.

The Bruins received a powerplay for too many men on the ice late in regulation with just 4:07 left. Boston has been 0 for 4 on the extra man in the game until Ryan Spooner found Bergeron in the high slot, who one timed a shot past  Calgary netminder Joni Ortio for his 24th goal of the year with just 3:24 left.

Ortio made 23 saves in net on the night for the Flames, who are 0-5-1 in their last six games and just 1-8-1 in their last 10. Calgary visits Buffalo Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Boston (35-23-6) continue with the third game of their four game home stand on Thursday night when they host the Chicago Blackhawks at 7 p.m.
