DEXTER– The Dexter Tigers went on a 16-0 fourth quarter run and defeated Calais 49-42 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls basketball semifinal game played Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
Peyton Grant scored 16 of her game high 22 points in the fourth quarter, including going 8-8 from the line in the quarter. Lauren Cook made a three pointer to give the Blue Devils a 36-27 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers followed that up with their big run.
The game started with Calais going on a 9-0 run after Dexter scored the first two points. The Blue Devils led 11-4 after the first quarter. Avery Herrick had a dominant first half, she put in nine points and grabbed eight rebounds during the half. Herricks performance helped the Tigers only be down 17-14 heading into halftime.
Calais started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. Cook had all seven points during that stretch. Herrick broke up that run with a layup. Calais held a 33-27 lead after the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to Grant and the Tigers as they outscored Calais 22-9. Herrick finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Cheyenne Beem had six points and eight rebounds. Grant went 9-10 from the free throw line. The Tigers out rebounded Calais 29-16. Dexter shot 16-18 from throw line, while the Blue Devils shot 0-2. Dexter (17-3) will play in the class C regional final on Saturday night at 7:05 PM against PVHS. It is the third straight season the Tigers have made the regional finals.
Cook led the Blue Devils with 16 points (12 in the second half). Sophie McVicar filled up the stat sheet with eight points, eight assists, six rebounds, and two assists. Olivia Huckins and Sage Phillips chipped in with eight points each. Calais finished the season with a 19-2 record.
