Mitch Fossier scored his sixth goal in the month of February with 51 seconds left in overtime Saturday night, to lead the Maine men’s hockey team to a two game sweep with a 2-1 win over Boston College at Alfond Arena.
Unlike Friday night, the Black Bears needed to rally in this one. David Cotton deflected a Oliver Wahlstrom shot from the far faceoff circle on the powerplay for his 18th goal of the year at 12:12 of the first to make it 1-0 Eagles.
Maine was held off the scoreboard for nearly the first 40 minutes, until Brendan Robbins evened the score late in the second. Robbins deflected a point shot from Jakub Sirota through a screen in front of BC goalie Joe Wall with 47 seconds to go in the period to tie it 1-1. That set up the dramatics for Fossier.
Late in the overtime, Eduards Tralmaks got to a puck and sent it up the boards to Chase Pearson. Pearson controlled the puck, then made a nice pass to Fossier at the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Woll, and Fossier took a quick backhander that beat the Eagles goaltender five-hole to end it.
Pearson, Tralmaks, Brady Keeper, and Sirota all had assists on the night for the Bears. Jeremy Swayman made 36 saves in the win, while Woll suffered the tough luck loss with 33 saves. Maine was 0-3 on the powerplay, while BC was 1-2. The Eagles drop to 10-18-3, 9-9-3 in Hockey East.
Maine is now 14-14-4 overall and 10-8-4 in Hockey East, having earned points in four straight games (7 of 8 possible). The Black Bears hit the road to face UMass in Amherst next Saturday night for a single game at 8 pm. Maine is still tied for 5th in Hockey East with Boston University.
