Husson baseball splits four game weekend

The Husson baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday at Newbury College in Massachusetts, before dropping a pair on Sunday in Connecticut against Mitchell College in non-conference action.

At Northboro, Mass on Saturday, the Eagles broke out to an eight run lead in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 16-7 win in game one of the doubleheader against the Nighthawks.

Conor Maguire had three hits and three RBI, and also scored three times to lead the Husson offense. Alex Chapman also had three hits and two RBI on a two run homer, as a total of six Eagles had multi-RBI in the game. Alex Brooks (2-0) got the win in relief of Austin Smith, allowing just one earned run on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Leo Frisella (0-2) took the loss for Newbury, allowing seven earned runs on six hits in just 2/3 of an inning on the hill.

In game two, Husson put 10 runs on the scoreboard before Newbury could get anything across and picked up the doubleheader sweep with a 12-2 win.

Maguire added three more hits and an RBI, while former Brewer High standout Kobe Rogerson also added three hits in the win. Luke Covey and Ethan Stoddard both had two hits and two RBI, while Nick Guerrette also added a hit and a pair of RBI. Chapman and Stoddard both had solo homeruns for Husson. Ryan Allender (1-1) pitched a solid 6.0 innings for the win on the hill, allowing just two earned runs, six hits, with two walks, and four strikeouts. Ryan West (0-1) took the loss for 1-7 Newbury, allowing four runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings.

At New London, CT Sunday, Husson was overmatched by Mitchell College and dropped both games by scores of 30-0 and 9-1. The Eagles are 7-8 on the season and will now return home to host Saint Josephs College (Maine) Thursday at 4 pm at the Winkin Complex in Bangor, before opening up conference play Saturday with the beginning of a four game series with UMaine-Farmington also to be played at the Wink.
