Chris Sale allowed seven runs in three innings as the Boston Red Sox fell 12-4 at Seattle in the 2019 season opener on Thursday night.
The only other time a Red Sox starting pitcher gave up at least seven runs on opening day was when Pedro Martinez gave up eight in 2002. Martinez ended up winning 20 games that season.

Mookie Betts had three hits while JD Martinez had two hits to pace the Red Sox offense. All nine players in the Red Sox starting lineup reached base and all recorded a hit with the exception of Mitch Moreland.
The Mariners smacked five home runs, including two from Tim Beckham.

It is the fourth time in franchise history the Mariners have started a season 3-0. It is the second straight season the Red Sox lost the season opener. The teams will play game two of the four game series on Friday night at 10:05 Eastern Time. Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound for the Red Sox against Yusei Kikuchi.
