Maine softball opens season with a win

Rachel Carlson, Felicia Lennon, and Meghan Royle recorded two hits each in leading the University of Maine softball team to a 7-4 victory over IPFW at Clearwater, Florida in the season opener for the Black Bears.

Maine took a 1-0 lead when Lennon doubled home Erika Leonard in the bottom of the first inning. They added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to base hits from Maddie Moore,  Royle, and Leonard.

Janelle Bouchard, Alyssa Derrick, and Lennon each had run scoring hits  during a three run fourth inning for the Black Bears.

Molly Flowers pitched two hit less innings to earn the victory in the circle. Flowers walked two and struck out three.  Annie Kennedy pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Maine (1-0) will play a doubleheader against Penn on Tuesday at Clearwater.
