The Husson Eagles baseball team swung back into North Atlantic Conference play over the weekend, as they welcomed in the Hornets from Northern Vermont-Lyndon for a four game series at Winkin Complex in Bangor.
In game one on Sunday, the visiting Hornets jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two innings and then held off Husson 8-5 in an eight inning contest. UNV-Lyndon struck very quickly in the top of the first as Jason Doris reached on an error to score a run to make it 1-0, followed by RBI singles from Caleb Laroche and Ryder Thornton to make it 3-0. The Eagles got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI sacrifice fly from David Leblanc, before the Hornets exploded in the second for five more to make it a seven run lead. Codi Smith and Chris April had two run doubles in that five run second for Lyndon. Kobe Rogerson had an RBI double, Leblanc a two run single, and Ethan Stoddard also adding an RBI single in a four run seventh for the Eagles but that is as close as they would get. Cam Graham (2-3) was roughed up a bit after a sensational one hit shutout last weekend over UM-Farmington. Graham allowed eight runs (only one earned), five hits, with three walks, and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Tyler Davis (1-3) picked up his first win for the Hornets allowing just one run and three hits over 6.0 innings. In Sundays second game, the Hornets had the early lead before the Eagles came back to pick up a 4-2 win for a split on the day and the weekend. Zak Johnson gave Lyndon an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first. Luke Covey tied the game in the home half of the first with an RBI single, before Nick Brown gave Husson the lead with an RBI single in the second. Brown had a fielders choice groundout RBI in the fourth, before Leblanc extended it to 4-1 in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Doris got one back for Lyndon with an RBI hit in the sixth inning to cut it to a pair of runs, but Jacob Gauvin shut the door in the seventh to preserve the Husson win in relief of Brandon Brunell who picked up the win. The freshman Brunell (2-0) went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs, six hits, with one walk, and four strikeouts. Matt Page (0-2) was the loser for Lyndon allowing three runs and seven hits over 4.0 innings. Rogerson and Stoddard had two hits a piece, and six other Eagles each had one hit to pace the 10 hit attack.
In Saturdays split at Husson, Lyndon spotted the hosts a one run lead then scored three in the fifth inning to pull away for a 6-1 win in the first game. In game two, the Eagles scored all their runs in the first three innings to pick up a 9-7 victory. Husson got their only run in the game one loss on a wild pitch that scored Covey. Johnson had two hits and three RBI to help the Hornets to the win. Ryan Allender (2-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5.0 innings to suffer the pitching loss, while Jake Jourdain (4-2) allowed just a run on three hits in the complete 9.0 inning effort to pick up the win for Lyndon. Conor McGuire picked up the key hit in a 5-5 game in the third inning with a three run triple to left center to spark the Eagles game two win. Stoddard added two hits, a pair of RBI, and two runs scored while three other Eagles picked up RBI in the victory. Jesse Colford (3-2) allowed two unearned runs to pick up the win in relief in 2.2 innings, while Nolan Dousa picked up his second save. James Mundy (1-2) was charged for the loss for the Hornets allowing eight earned runs on six hits in just 2.2 innings. Husson is now 15-11 overall, 5-3 in NAC play. The Eagles will be at Thomas College Wednesday for a conference doubleheader. Northern Vermont-Lyndon is 7-15, 2-2.
