Red Sox rally to walk off first home win of 2019

The Boston Red Sox rallied from a 5-0 deficit and scored two runs in the ninth inning to earn a 7-6 win at Fenway Park on Thursday night.

The Red Sox came into the bottom of the ninth inning down 6-5. Mookie Betts drew a one out walk, Mitch Moreland ended a nine pitch at bat by drilling the ball to centerfield for a double that scored Betts. JD Martinez was intentionally walked. Eduardo Nunez ran for Moreland and stole third base.

After a Xander Bogaerts walk, Rafael Devers chopped a ball to right field that scored Nunez and gave the Red Sox a walk off win.

The Blue Jays scored five runs in the third inning on monster homers from Justin Smoak and Rowdy Tellez. The Red Sox responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Devers and Dustin Pedroia got run scoring hits.

Moreland evened the score at five with a solo homer in the seventh inning. Freddy Galvis gave the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth inning with a homer off Ryan Brasier. Marcus Walden (2-0) held the Blue Jays in the top of the ninth to set up the dramatics in the bottom half of the inning. Toronto closer Ken Giles (0-1) had converted 34 straight saves before the blown one on this night, giving up two earned runs on a pair of hits and three walks in a third of an inning.

The Red Sox will open up a four game series with the Orioles on Friday night at 7:10. Eduardo Rodriguez and David Hess is the scheduled pitching matchup.
