DELAND, FL- The Maine Black Bear baseball team snapped their four game losing streak on Wednesday night by defeating the Long Island University Blackbirds 3-2.
Danny Casals began the scoring in the bottom of the first for Maine as he nailed his first career homerun to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Tommy Jakubowski hit a two run double to give the Blackbirds their first lead in the third inning at 2-1. Kevin Stypulkowski drove in Brett Chappell with a run scoring double for Maine in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 2-2.
With Jeremy Pena on first base for Maine in the bottom of the eighth, Brendan Geary laid down a sacrifice bunt to try to move Pena into scoring position. A throwing error though by Long Island allowed Pena to score the go ahead run which ended up being the game winner to make it 3-2.
Chris Murphy started on the hill for Maine but got a no decision. Murphy went four innings allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Charlie Butler(1-0) got the win allowing no runs and no hits while striking out five in the next four innings. Logan Fullmer pitched the ninth inning and struck out the side while walking one and earning his third save of the year. For LIU (3-7), Nick Freijomil (0-1) took the loss in his inning of work in the eighth when the Bears scored the unearned run.
Maine (4-8) will open a three game series on Friday night at Stetson. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
