Strong pitching leads Husson to big doubleheader sweep

April 25, 2019

The Husson Eagles baseball team got a pair of great pitching performances Wednesday evening, en route to a key North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep over the visiting Thomas College Terriers at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.

In the first game Alex Chapman had three RBI, and Jesse Colford pitched a complete game shutout in the 5-0 Eagles victory.

Luke Covey scored on a wild pitch and Chapman hit a two run single in the first inning to give Husson an early 3-0 advantage. Turns out that is all they would need, as Colford (5-2) only allowed four hits, with no walks, and three strikeouts in the 7.0 inning win on the hill. Nolan Brown reached on a fielders choice for an RBI in the fifth, and Chapman added an RBI single in the sixth. Dylan Copeland (1-3) took the loss on the mound for Thomas allowing five runs, five hits, with five walks, and one strikeout in 4.0 innings.

In the second game pitching was the story again, as Ryan Allender fired a one hitter through six innings and Jacob Gauvin picked up a save as Husson completed the sweep with a 1-0 win.

The only run came on a Terriers error. Covey with two outs in the fourth inning would hit a triple. The Thomas right fielder John Villaneuva tried to cut Covey down at third, but threw the ball away allowing the Eagles runner to score the only run of the game. Allender (3-3) allowed only a Alexander Miller single over the first six innings, while also walking three and striking out one. Gauvin got his third save, allowing a two out Thomas single in the seventh but then getting Tyler Gee to ground out to end it. Thomas used five different pitchers in the game with Bradly Smith (0-1) taking the loss allowing an unearned run on one hit in 2.0 innings thrown. Husson improves to 19-14 overall, 8-4 in NAC. Thomas is now 10-19, 8-4. The Eagles are now in a second place tie with the Terriers in the conference standings just one game behind Northern Vermont-Lyndon. Husson will host UMPI for a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday to finish off NAC play.
