Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 298 past athlete of the week winners.
This week, we had four Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie allowed one hit and struck out 22 in 10 innings to lead the Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers in two tournament wins. McKechinie joins Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton) as the only student/athletes with at least 10 athlete of the week honors. Bouchard finished with 19. McKechnie and the Howlers will take on Stearns in the class D regional final.
The Charles Inn female athlete of the week
- Leine McKechnie- PVHS- softball- pitched a one hitter with nine strikeouts in 14-2 five inning win over Deer Isle-Stonington in class D semifinal. Had a no hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 4-4 at the plate with a double and triple in 28-0 quarterfinal win over Fort Fairfield.
Runner up
- Avery Herrick- Dexter – softball – struck out 11 in the circle and had two hits and walked at the plate in 17-3 quarterfinal win over Fort Kent. Pitched a shutout and had RBI double in 2-0 win over top seed Bucksport in class C semifinal game.
Other nominations
- Bre Oakes- Hermon – softball – pitched a three hitter with 15 strikeouts plus had four hits with the bat in 8-0 class B prelim win over Nokomis.
- Lanie Perry- Narraguagus- softball – pitched a three hitter with 16 strikeouts and had two hits in 5-0 class C semifinal win over Central.
