Tyler Madden registered a hat trick just under 28 minutes into action on Friday night and also added an assist to lead the #13 Northeastern Huskies to a 5-2 win over the Maine Black Bears in men’s Hockey East action at Matthews Arena in Boston.
Madden scored at 1:09 and at 5:33 of the first period to quickly give Northeastern a 2-0 lead. Later in the period at 11:08 Maines Mitchell Fossier took a shot on Northeastern goalie Craig Pantano that was stopped, but Fossier collected his own rebound and got it to Eduards Tralmaks who whistled home his eighth goal of the season to cut it to 2-1.
The Huskies put the game away in the second period when Zach Solow scored on the powerplay at 5:18, and Madden got the hat trick at 7:52 to make it 4-1. Ben Poisson did score his second goal of the season on a 2 on 1 breakout with Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup at 10:41 for the Black Bears to cut it to a two goal deficit again, but Northeastern got another powerplay goal this time from Aidan McDonough at 1:13 of the third period to end the scoring.
Jeremy Swayman made 22 saves in the loss for Maine (7-4-2, 4-3-2 Hockey East). Pantano also made 22 saves in the win for Northeastern who improves to 7-4-2, 4-3-1. The Huskies went 2-5 on the powerplay, while the Black Bears were 0-5. Along with the four point night by Madden, NU got a goal and two assists from McDonough and also three assists from Grant Jozefek. Schmidt-Svestrup, Fossier, Tim Doherty, and Emil Westerlund all had an assist each for Maine. The two teams will face off again Saturday night at 7 p.m.
