December 4, 2019

BANGOR, Maine- Kelly Fogarty led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and set a school record for made three-pointers in a game on Wednesday night, as the Maine Black Bears exploded in the second half to pick up a 104-43 non-conference women’s basketball win over in-state Division III opponent Husson at the Cross Insurance Center.

Maine (3-6) led from start to finish and by as many as 10 in the first quarter behind eight points from Maddy McVicar. After the Black Bears went up 12 in the second quarter, Husson (1-4) would cut it to seven on two from the line for Sydney Allen. The hosts though scored six of the final eight points of the half and led 37-26 at the break. The second half was all Maine. A three-pointer from Dor Saar, a three point play from McVicar, layups from Anna Kahelin and Abbe Laurence, and another McVicar hoop sparked a 12-0 run to start the third to extend the lead to 23. Fogarty had four of her three-pointers in the quarter as the Bears outscored the Eagles 33-11. Fogarty would break the record with three more from behind the arc in a 34 point fourth quarter by the Black Bears, nailing her ninth three-pointer of the game as the final margin was the largest lead of the night. She breaks the record of eight three-pointers that was set by former teammate and current assistant coach Parise Rossignol, who did so in a game last January 30th in a home win over UMass-Lowell. Fogarty said, “I was pretty frustrated with how I started off the season shooting wise. I know I am capable of doing this, and I don’t think the beginning of the year was a good representation on all of us as shooters and our hard work so I think it is a good start here”. Maine had 100 or more points in regulation for the first time since November 2017 against UMaine-Fort Kent. It is also the 24th time the Black Bears have scored in triple digits in school history.

Fogarty overall shot 11-14, 9-12 from the arc. McVicar added 19 points on 8-11 shooting with six rebounds. Laurence recorded a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Saar and Anne Simon each added 11 points, with Simon adding six rebounds and Saar dishing out a career-high 14 assists to also record a double double. The 14 assists ties a UMaine record. Kahelin also got into double digits with 10 points. Maine shot 61% from the floor in the game, and 16-32 (50%) from the three-point arc that also ties a school record. Bailey Donovan had 10 points and seven rebounds for Husson, while Allen also added 10 points. The Eagles only shot 31% from the field, and the Bears forced 23 turnovers outscoring the Eagles 35-0 on those miscues. Maine head coach Amy Vachon said, “I was really pleased with how we came out in the second half. I thought the first half we were lackluster in energy and in all facets of the game and I thought Husson played really well. As a result in that second half we came out right from the start, got on the floor, made stops, and hit shots and I thought we had alot of impressive individual performances as well”.

Maine stays at home and welcomes in Harvard in another non-conference matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m.
