The Central Red Devils baseball team broke open a tie game with four runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 9-4 victory at Bucksport on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils got on the scoreboard to take the lead in the third inning when Andrew Speed hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tanner Scott and Ethan Mailman delivered a single to score Zach Randall. Scott and Randall combined for three stolen bases during the inning to set up the rally.
The Bucks responded quickly to cut the lead in half during the bottom of the third inning. Leadoff hitter Tanner Stegner scored on a Jacob Gauvin single. Bucksport evened the score when they took advantage of a Central error and a bases loaded walk.
Speed, Mailman, Caleb Shaw, and Micah Ward each had a hit to spark the fifth inning rally for the Red Devils Grant Poulin hit a sacrifice fly as Central took a 6-2 lead. Bucksport responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning with Riley Macleod and Andrew Allen getting the big hits.
Shaw put the game away with a double that scored two runs in the sixth inning. Randall pitched the first four innings to earn the victory, while Shaw locked down the save by pitching the final three innings. Central (2-1) will host Mattanawcook on Saturday. Bucksport (1-3) will play at Searsport on Friday.
